Jente I
Artist Sophia Wessel
Drawing on canvas paper
Title (english): Girl I
Size h 40 × w 30 cm
She has two drawings of two girls (Girl II), perhaps they are the same girl? At least the drawings are made in the same technique, colours and materials. Sophia is portraying them with hollow eyesight. The pupils are missing. Yet one of the girls is clearly looking straight at me. The other has a more thoughtful and dreamy expression. Sophia has made this two portraits on a canvas paper. They resemble the sketches made before a painting is made. The lines that disappear when replaced by brush strokes. Like a human life. Transforming from decade to decade. Beginning as a blank slate, contours and a sketch is made, thereafter strokes layered on.
Sophia Wessel has loved drawing and creating since childhood. Most of her work is inspired from her life. Much of the art is an expression of the artist’s experience with schizophrenia. The art is often very personal, and she shares a lot of on her Instagram.
